The NCUA has recognized that there is a problem with Network Security and has put in place an IT Security Compliance Guide http://www.ncua.gov/letters/letters.html This guide recommends "A credit union should consider the use of an intrusion detection system to alert it to attacks on computer systems that store member information. In assessing the need for such a system, a credit union should evaluate the ability of its staff to rapidly and accurately identify an intrusion and the damage that could occur between the time an intrusion occurs and the time the intrusion is recognized and action is taken." To help credit unions determine their IT Security needs NCUA has provided a checklist which can be downloaded from http://www.ncua.gov/letters/2006/CU/06-CU-10-ENCL.xls Some items included on the checklist are; auditing and monitoring, logging and review procedures for firewalls and intrusion detection/intrusion prevention systems, and list of IT incidents, intrusions, or attacks since the last examination.

Security is Top Priority with the NCUA

The morning news catches your attention that a local financial institution was hacked into yesterday and they've made the news. Unfortunately for them, the hackers obtained all of their member information from their database and the hackers are holding their data ransom. Could it happen to you? You have firewalls and check logs periodically, but would you know what to look for?
